Testimonial

"Sue Miley really helped us to think "outside of the box".  In fact, it was a mind-blowing experience to have such a paradigm shift in seeing our operation from an objective, business-oriented perspective.  She enabled us to consider some very specific recommendations that will set us on a better course for the future.  Further, Sue was empathetic, though directive, as she went above and beyond - she gave us far more than what we paid for - actually it was a bargain.  I recommend Sue Miley's coaching to anyone wanting change!"

Navigating Your Career in 2009

Unemployment is at its’ highest rate in years and many companies are announcing upcoming layoffs.  Hopefully you are not in one of these companies; however, it is only wise to be proactive in managing your own career.  Here are some suggestions

If you are out of work:

1.       Make job search your new job. You now have a minimum of 8 additional hours free each day. Make the most of it by developing a job search plan. Just like you would manage any project or assignment, develop a plan with action steps and due dates to keep you focused and productive. This will help you find a job more quickly and keep you from being overcome by anxiety or depression. It is a win-win and it works! If you would like a worksheet for creating a job search plan, download at this link.
2.       Revise your resume. This is your opportunity to shine. It is also your first impression to any potential employers. For tips on resume writing click on this link and download Job Search Workshop.
3.       Practice interviewing. Don’t take it for granted that you will have the perfect answers when you are in the hot seat. You know the questions they will ask. Write down your answers and practice interviewing with someone. You will be surprised to see the questions that hang you up when you actually practice. Also, practice discussing why you are out of work. It is important to sound positive and appreciative of past opportunities, not bitter or resentful. Practice to get even a negative tone out of your voice. After all, there is a lot of competition for available jobs and employers want the most experienced and positive employees!

If you are still working but want to be proactive:

1.       Be proactive in seeking out expectations.  What is your employer looking for from you in the coming year?  If you know what the expectations are you can focus on achieving them. Keep your boss updated on how you are trying to meet the needs they laid out for you.
2.       Look for opportunities to cross-train. Even if you have to do it on your own time, find ways to expand your skills or responsibilities. Employers will want to keep employees that can fill multiple roles. And even if you still get laid off, now you additional skills to put on your resume.
3.       Update your resume. This will ensure you can act fast if need be and also it will remind you of the skills and experience you bring to the company. This will enhance your confidence or calm your fears in case you are creating a self-fulfilling prophesy due to anxiety.
4.       Work hard and show unbridled enthusiasm. The safest haven for any employee is to do a great job and have people like to work with you. Complaining all of the time and not achieving goals is a sure way to be on the list if layoffs come.

These are just a couple of ways for you to take control of your career. And always look to God for direction first. As it says in Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

And in Proverbs 3:5-6

Trust in the LORD with all your heart
       and lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight.

I pray for God’s blessing in your career for the coming year!
